The winery below Reinhold Messner’s castle
Reinhold Messner founded Castel Juval Unterortl in 1992 below Juval Castle. The independent estate now farms about 4.3 hectares of organically certified vines on steep slopes in the Vinschgau.
Different exposures, mountain winds and vineyards between 620 and 850 metres create a remarkable collection of small alpine microclimates.
02 · Place
Vines at the edge of the mountains
Glacial deposits, gneiss and sandy soils combine with dramatic differences between day and night. Grapes ripen slowly and retain the fragrance and acidity that define true mountain wine.
03 · In the cellar
Winemaking with purpose
The grape is handled to preserve clarity and alpine tension. Neutral vessels keep citrus, flowers and the stony character of the high vineyards in the foreground.
